PIC 220 Graphical Controller
Low-Cost Compact All-in-One controller with Built-In I/O, Graphical display, and MicroSD™

Introducing the PIC 220, an “all-in-one” controller small enough to fit in the palm of your hand (only 3.75” square). Priced below the cost of a micro PLC plus operator interface, these devices include a Graphical Operator Interface, Built-in I/O, Networking and Removable Mass Data Storage. PIC is a robust, reliable control product that combines a traditional controller (programmed with ladder logic) with an operator interface, I/O and networking into an integrated, all-in-one unit using a single industry-recognized software package called PICware™.

First with Removable MicroSD™ Memory

The PIC 220 is the first industrial product to include support for the latest standard in Removable Mass Storage. This dime-sized memory, to date only found on video-enabled cellular phones, is available in densities ranging from 128MB to 1GB. This is ideal for storing process data, machine recipes, and application files. Users can easily update their PIC 220 application program through this memory device — allowing logic and screen updates to be made in a single step with transportable media.

Built-in I/O and Networking

The four available PIC 220 models with built-in I/O include digital, analog, and high speed I/O. For machine control, the high speed I/O can provide totalizing, frequency measurement, PWM generation and pulse outputs. The available Universal Analog I/O is ideal for process control applications with high-resolution inputs which can be configured for Thermocouple, RTD, 4-20mA, +/-100mV, and 0-10V signals. The PIC 220 memory structure supports over 5000 I/O. The PIC 220 also has field installable communications options. An internal10/100MBit Ethernet card makes machine data and PIC 220 programming accessible at a plant-wide or world-wide basis. In addition, the PIC 220 is available with an internal 14.4K telephone modem card. While Ethernet and modem are optional, dual RS-232/RS-485 serial ports and an integrated CAN-based network (PICCAN™) are standard.

Applications

As a compact, powerful controller – the PIC 220 can be used in literally thousands of applications. From OEM machine control to machine monitoring in a plant environment, the PIC 220 can be instrumental in keeping you or your customer’s automation activities running smoothly. Future expansion is not a concern, because PIC 220 is part of the wide ranging PIC product line — programmable throughout with a single FREE software package, PICware™. The PIC 220 is designed with an attractive, generic look so it will fit in with most panel or console designs – you can even have your company’s logo added to the overlay or specify a custom keypad altogether.

Temperature Control

With built-in RTD and Thermocouple available, along with auto-tune PID, the PIC 220 can perform advanced temperature control and much more on any machine.

Packaging

The PIC 220’s compact size, affordable price, and fast response make it a natural for packaging machinery of all types.

Agriculture

A small rugged package, 12Vdc compatibility, and removable mass storage are ideal for the agricultural environment.

Water Treatment

The PIC 220 offers the perfect I/O mix, size, and communications capability for Pump Control, Tank Monitoring and Remote Telemetry in general.

I/O Expansion

PIC 220 I/O expansion is not limited to its Built-in I/O. SmartStix I/O is high-speed and can be local or highly distributed. SmartMod RTU/Modbus I/O is a cost effective means of adding a small number of analog or digital I/O.

The PIC 600 Series Color-Touch PIC series features a fast, powerful logic engine, XGA, QVGA and SVGA resolution touch screens and optional snap-on I/O. PIC (Operator Control Station) is a robust, reliable control product that combines a traditional controller (programmed in ladder logic) operator interface, I/O and networking into an integrated, all-in-one unit using a single software package.

The PIC 600 Series has two screen sizes to choose from (8.4" and 12.1"), and a typical logic scan rate of 0.2mS/K. In addition, the PIC 600 Series has embedded Ethernet and supports many Internet capabilities such as remote data access, programming, hosting HTML-based Web pages, and FTP sites.

Plus, the PIC 600 Series line has a built-in CompactFLASH® slot that allows users to easily store machine or process data (up to 2GB). Programs can be updated and loaded through the memory card, a real advantage for OEMs or those supporting distant sites. Most PIC 600 Series Color-Touch PIC has optional I/O and video add-on features too. Base PIC 600 Series units provide control, operator interface, and communication functionality. Video connectivity can be achieved with the VIM400, the video input option. This modularity allows the I/O or video functions to be omitted or added to more precisely meet the application requirements.

Backpack Options Add Local and Remote I/O
There are two Backpack options for the PIC 620 and PIC 660. These include: (HE-BP41 & HE-BP43, with high speed counter). Both are compact and easy-to-install on the back of the PIC 600 Series base unit. With Backpack HE-BP41 installed, up to two SmartStack I/O modules can be snapped on. (HE-BP43 supports four.) In addition, Backpack users can connect hundreds of local or remote I/O using our Fiber Optic Expansion (FOX) I/O and our Smartsticks terminal-type I/O modules. If the HE-BP43 Backpack is selected, a 500 KHz High Speed Counter (with PWM) is included. For smaller applications, the PIC 600 Series with Backpack creates a single, compact package that includes control, display, networking, and up to four snap-on SmartStack I/O modules.

Video Input Option Allows Machine Viewing and More Security
The advanced feature of video input functionality (VIM400) for the PIC 600 Series Color-Touch PIC is being used more and more by companies who need to integrate security, view machinery in remote locations, or need to incorporate a machine vision monitor with their control system. The video input option allows four channels of NTSC or PAL video to be connected to the PIC 600 Series (PIC 620, PIC 660.)

SmartStack™ Modular I/O
 - Expandable, Stackable I/O System for PIC

Unlike conventional PLC I/O, SmartStackT I/O is not a rack-based design. SmartStack I/O modules are snapped onto the Operator Control Station (PIC) or an off-mounted base, and then stacked onto each other. They utilize a very small amount of panel space for the number of I/O provided.

SmartStack modules are encased in metal housings and meet stringent noise, vibration, and shock standards. A maximum of 4 modules can be stacked directly onto a PIC, and another 20 modules can be added by using the fiber optic FOX I/O System. Color-Touchscreen PIC models can have up to 20 SmartStack modules using the FOX I/O System.

There are over 50 SmartStack I/O modules available. They include a variety of mixed I/O modules offering a combination of inputs and outputs, digital and analog, and specialty modules: High Speed Counter (1 MHz), Stepper Indexer, ASCII BASIC, and AC Power Monitoring modules. You can select from a full complement of temperature input modules (Thermocouple, RTD,Thermistor), and SmartStack communication options include Ethernet TCP/IP, DeviceNetT Master and Slave, PROFIBUS Master and Slave and CANopen Master.

You have several ways to expand the number of SmartStack modules. Connecting a miniRCS via the PICCAN port adds one more SmartStack module; networking an RCS controller allows you to add up to 4 more SmartStack modules. If you use a FOX100 I/O Expansion Module and the FOX I/O System, you can have up to 23 SmartStack modules (3 modules and the FOX100 mounted on the PIC plus 20 modules with the FOX I/O System). When using a Color-Touch PIC, you may connect 5 bases and have up to 20 SmartStack modules.

Unlike conventional PLC I/O, Smartsticks™ I/O is a new terminal-block style I/O for the Operator Control Station (PIC). It can be used to expand the I/O capacity of any PIC, and it is very cost effective as remote I/O.

Because Smartsticks I/O connects to any PIC PICCAN™ network port, it can be combined with SmartStack™ I/O to provide the best I/O selection for the application. And, output modules feature Electronic Short-Circuit Protection (ESCP).

Compact DIN-rail Mounted
:
Smartsticks I/O is extremely compact, providing 16 and 32 point digital I/O in a package only 1.5" (39mm) deep and a footprint of 2"H x 4.5"W (50 x 116mm) or 2"H x 7"W (50 x 177mm). With its small footprint, Smartsticks I/O takes up very little panel space whether located in the main control panel or tucked away in a remote location.

Smartsticks I/O has a barrier style terminal strip and can be mounted on a DIN-rail. Plus, removable terminals make field replacement fast and convenient.

Expands I/O Capacity, Local or Remote:
From the miniPIC* to the Color-Touchscreen PIC, Smartsticks I/O easily expands I/O Capacity locally or remotely,
from the miniPIC* to the Color-Touchscreen PIC, Smartsticks I/O easily expands the I/O capacity of any PIC utilizing the PICCAN network port available with every model. It is especially cost effective when added to a miniPIC.

Smartsticks I/O offers fast response times without sacrificing robustness, with no need for a costly I/O interface unit. In addition to its peer-to-peer capabilities, PICCAN is used as a highly efficient method of distributing Smartsticks I/O up to 6000 ft* * away.

Easy to Set Up-Easy to Configure:
Time and complexity to configure most remote I/O systems is a drawback. Smartsticks I/O greatly reduces setup time. Just assign a unique ID to the I/O module using the integrated rotary switches, connect a 5-wire shielded cable, and add a single, simple function block to your PICware™ control program. You'll be up and running in no time.

Signal Conditioners

Praestar offers several general-purpose signal conditioning products designed to augment the PIC product line. These devices are designed to transform I/O already present on the PIC 220 controller to support alternate signal types and voltages. These devices are not limited to use with the PIC 220, but will most commonly be used with that controller series.

These products allow normally incompatible signals and loads (AC inputs, AC outputs, etc.) to easily interface with PIC. Three categories of these products are available—those which adapt digital input signals, those which drive specialized digital output loads and those which allow analog outputs to be generated from digital, PWM outputs.

The PIC 200 Series PIC directly supports DC digital inputs only. Two signal conditioning devices allow the connection of AC inputs as well. The HEXDIA converts 120/240 VAC digital inputs to 24 VDC (8 points). Similarly, the HE-XDIA-24 converts lower voltage 24 VAC input signals to 24 VDC (8 points).

Three signal conditioning devices allow the standard 24 VDC, 0.5 A outputs of the PIC 200 Series PIC to drive specialized loads. The solid-state HEXDQA allows a 120/250 VAC load to be driven at up to 2 A (four points). The solid state HE-XDQD will drive a 24 VAC/24 VDC load at up to 3 A (four points). The mechanical HE-XDQR can drive up to a 10A load, supporting voltages of 120/250 VAC, and 24/30 VDC (four points).

Two signal conditioning devices provide the PIC 200 Series PIC with additional analog outputs, by converting 24 VDC PWM outputs already present on the controllers. The HE-XPC converts 24 VDC PWM outputs to 4 to 20 mA (2 channels), while the HE-XPV converts 24 VDC PWM outputs to 0 to 10V (two channels).
